Petrol Conversions

Why convert your car to LP Gas? Here are some of the advantages:

  • Lower fuel costs- savings are typically in the order of 40%
  • Improved combustion characteristics – Easier cold starting, smoother running of your engine
  • Cleaner burning and immediate reduction of emissions – less pollution, carbon monoxide gas reduced by 80%, emissions on cold motor starts reduced by as much as 95%
  • Reduced maintenance – fewer oil and filter changes, reduced sludge in engine
  • Increased range with dual fuel system

We use the most advanced LP Gas conversion equipment and only carbon steel and high tensile steel tanks. We recommend fitting a dual fuel system (LP Gas and petrol) – simply switch from LP Gas to petrol and vice versa whilst driving.

All conversions by Torquegas comply with the latest Australian Standard AS1425, which makes your conversion one of the safest in the world. We install a remote filler, generally located next to the petrol filler to facilitate easy filling from outside the vehicle. We also install a dashboard mounted switch and separate LP Gas gauge leaving the existing petrol gauge unchanged.

New equipment is added at the time of conversion with very little of the existing equipment changed or removed. All conversions will however, include a dedicated gas fill point.

A steel LPG storage tank is installed, usually in the boot but it can go under the floor in vehicles with enough clearance (e.g. four wheel drives, utes, vans.) This tank must be fitted with an automatic fill limiter (AFL) which ensures you cannot fill your tank to more than the safe fill limit of 80%. This is necessary as LPG requires room to expand if the temperature increases.

A converter/regulator is added. This converts the liquid gas into a gaseous vapour, as well as regulating the process.

A special air/fuel mixer is installed to ensure the correct amounts of LPG and air are mixed together during combustion.

A fuel lock is fitted that lets fuel flow when the engine is running but shuts off the fuel supply as soon as the engine stops.

If the vehicle is post 1986 (i.e. built to run on unleaded petrol), it must be fitted with an LPG Fuel Control Processor

We are able to fit conversions to most vehicles. However, vehicles manufactured since December 2003 must be fitted with an emissions compliant kit. Click here for a vehicle listing of kits available.

Testimonial - what are customers saying?

"Torquegas has converted 4 of my vehicles since 2003 and I couldn’t be happier" Reg (Little Mountain)

"I have had gas on many vehicles over the last 20 years but the SVI system on my Nissan Maxima gives the best performance and economy I have ever experienced on LP Gas" Bill (Gold Coast)

Frequently Asked Questions - Petrol Conversions

What is LP Gas?

Liquified Petroleum Gas (LP Gas) like petrol is a hydrocarbon fuel. It is mainly composed of propane and butane with a minor amount of propylene. LP Gas in its natural state is a vapour, but when moderately compressed, it becomes a liquid. This enables a vehicle with a full LP Gas cylinder to travel a similar distance as the same vehicle would travel on an equal amount of petrol, in most cases a consistent vehicle performance will be maintained with clean, smooth combustion under all driving conditions, LP Gas is non toxic, non corrosive, free of lead and heavier than air. LP Gas in its basic state is both colourless and odourless. An odourant with a distinctive smell is added to the LP Gas at time of production this is to alert people in the unlikely event of a gas leak.

Will LP Gas supplies last?

Virtually all LPG used in Australia is produced here. Substantial quantities of LPG are exported as surplus to our requirements. Known reserves of gas are far greater than those of crude oil from which petrol is derived. So LPG will remain readily available well into the future.

Does conversion alter insurance or registration cost?

In all States the major insurance companies do not generally impose an extra premium or penalty for LP Gas fuelled vehicles. This further confirms the inherent safety of conversions.

What does Dual-fuel mean?

Dual-fuel means the vehicle can operate on one of two fuels, usually petrol or LPG.
